This is a unique opportunity to undertake game viewing
by train followed by some very rewarding and fairly strenuous walking
in Tanzania’s newest national park. Udzungwa has a unique
rainforest with many rare plants not found elsewhere in the world.
Home to six types of primate as well as populations of elephant
buffalo, lion, leopard and wild dog as well as rare species of forest
bird only recently discovered. Udzungwa Mountains National Park
has some of the best walking in Tanzania. This trek is organized
to coincide with the train timings on the Tanzania to Zambia train
line.
Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Udzungwa (Monday)
Transfer from Dar es Salaam to Udzungwa by TAZARA train with professional
guide onboard (about 6 hours); enjoy game viewing en route in Mikumi
National Park and the Selous Game Reserve. Arrive at Mang’ula
Halt at 17:49. On arrival walk through village to the Udzungwa Mountain
Lodge for dinner and overnight; evening culture tour to the nearby
village
Day 2 Hiking to Sanje Campsite (Tuesday)
Breakfast at the lodge, meet the guide and headed out to the Sanje
waterfalls. It is about 5 to 6 hours hiking through green forest.
Expect to see monkeys, including rare Iringa red colobus and huge
ancient trees, some of them 200 years old. Dinner and overnight
at Sanje campsite
Day 3: Sanje to Mwanihana Peak 2150m – Sanje
(Wednesday)
Trekking through the changing range of the forest; from Miombo woodland,
low-land forest, sub-montane forest, highland plateau to pristine
montane forest before reaching the bare rock and grass of the summit
natural glades. Descend to Sanje Campsite for overnight camping.
Please Note: Mwanihana Peak is the second highest peak in the Udzungwa
Mountains and suitable for the keen hikers only.
Day 4: Descend to the Park head quarter (Thursday)
Early morning start descend to the park gate and walk to the lodge
for hot breakfast and shower, and then rest, late afternoon walking
excursions to the Ranger Post along the Ruiper River (accompanied
by armed ranger), accommodation at Udzungwa Mountain Lodge. 03:34
the train will be leaving Mang’ula for Dar es Salaam, arriving
late morning.
